    Aceh Institute is an independent research –and policy-oriented— institute bashttp://www.weebly.com/weebly/main.phped in Banda Aceh. It provides a venue for academia of scholar-activists and scholar-practitioners in Aceh and beyond, both to exercise their rights and responsibilities as public scholars, and to enhance as well as improving their contributions to the effort of developing better community in Aceh. This ideal will be achieved through activities of:

    1.      Advancing Acehnese scholars’ capacity in conducting studies, analysis and research in various strategic field;

    2.      Conducting innovative, constructive and applicative researches on Aceh in the field of history; economics and development; politics, law and human rights; education, and human resources development; social change and culture; religion and civilization; peace and conflict studies; regional planning and environment; democracy and civil society; as well as science, technology and health issues;

    3.      Developing comprehensive understanding and cooperation with different stakeholders and parties inside and outside Aceh regarding to and how to solve problems faced by the Acehnese in particular, and the world wide humanity in general.   

    4.      Improving the role of academia in empowering government’s institutions through advocacy for research-based policy making and intellectual consultancy methods.

    SCOPE OF SERVICES

    A. RESEARCH AND SURVEY

    Several complete and on-going RESEARCH projects are as follow:

    1. (2008). Women and peace process: A compilation of 8 research packages on social perception and social dynamic about women during peace and conflict time in 
        Aceh, supported by MSR - World Bank, SERASI Project of IRD – USAID. The 8 packages are as follow:
        a.  Women as wives of combatants.
        b.  Women as ex-combatants.
        c.  Women as victims of sexual assault.
        d.  etc

    2. (2008) the dynamic of violence conflict in the highlander Aceh, a joint-project of Aceh Institute and Kontras Aceh.
    3. (2008) Series packages of New-Aceh monograph: A compilation of 10 research packages on current socio-political condition in Aceh, supported by TIFA  
         Foundation, Jakarta. The 10 packages are as follows:
         a. The politics of the formation of ALA-ABAS provinces and peace sustainability
         b. Role of religious leader in the peace processes.
         c. Etc

    4.      (2008) Annual research packages on current socio-political condition in Aceh, supported by CAFOD. The 10 packages are as follows:

    a.       Criminality phenomenon after the Helsinki agreement.

    b.      Local parties and opportunities for political changes in Aceh.

    c.       Educational investment in related to the economics development in Aceh.

    d.      The effectiveness of public services: a qualitative study on community responses toward the performance of civil servant in Aceh Timur.

    e.       Education and human resources index in Aceh Timur.

    f.        Reintegration and reconciliation dynamics in Aceh Timur.

    g.       Toward the best public services in the district of Aceh Barat.

    h.      Social perception and attitude toward reintegration and reconciliation dynamics in Aceh Barat

    5.      (2008). New-Aceh vision: An initiative to reconstruct the future of Aceh, supported by CAFOD.

    6.      (2007–2009). Aceh, policy making and legal institutions, a collaborative research with the Australian National University (ANU).

    7.      (2007). Religion fanaticism as an obstacle for community achievement, supported by BRR NAD-Nias.

    8.      (2007). Best-practices for women and children issues, supported by BRR NAD-Nias.

    9.      (2006). The Leadership dynamics within the Aceh society, supported by BRR NAD Nias. 

    10.  (2006). Perception among teachers on a planning toward competency test retaking: case study in Aceh Besar and Banda Aceh, dukungan siapa?

    11.  (2006). The Impact of the Tsunami on the psychological state among teachers: A case study in Aceh Besar; supported by CAFOD.

    12.  (2006). Studies on the first 12 months of reconstruction and rehabilitation post-Tsunami in Aceh, supported by CAFOD.

    D. REGULAR STUDIES (BALEE SEUMIKE)

    Aceh Institute has organized regular studies on every Friday in Balee Seumike, Punge, Aceh Institute (weekly basis). The study raises the actual topic throughout the week with experts from any different background nationally as well as international. Summary of discussion was published through website: www.acehinstitute.org. 

    E. LIBRARY “PROF. M. ISA SULAIMAN”

    Prof. Muhammad Isa Sulaiman was one of prominent Acehnese historian whom part of the founder of Aceh Institute. He passed away during the Tsunami on December 26, 2004. As a tribute to his contribution to Aceh Institute and to knowledge development in Aceh, we name the library under his name. The library has around 2405 collection with its 112 permanent member representing all discipline and background.

    F. INTELLECTUAL EMPOWERMENT ACTIVITIES

    The capacity building for researcher has been conducted through several activities such as:

    1.      To provide opportunities to participate in research through competitive schema (research call proposal). Aceh Institute will review and select all incoming proposal before granting fund for qualified proposal. After the research process is finished, Aceh Institute will criticize the finding and provide the additional valuable input.

    2.      To provide a room for intellectual expression through website (www.acehinstitute.org). The website gain much appreciation and support from public indicated by highly participation of anybody who wants to write their opinion in the website. We published relatively two newly article every days.

    3.      To provide a room for intellectual expression through book review contest. At least there two big contest as follow: (December, 2008). Conflict resolution in Islam: A normative study using the historical perspective in the Tgk. H. Ibrahim Bardan view (Abu Panton).

    4.      To provide trainings such as: (a) research method , (2) data processing using SPSS, (3) basic training on how to do a survey and polling, (4) ANP training, and (5) information technology.

    G. PARTICIPATION IN POST CONFLICT DEVELOPMENT

    To increase the participation of intellectual community in maintaining peace process after the Helsinki agreement, Aceh Institute has conducted and initiated new activities such as:

    1. Opening up column in two local newspapers called Harian Aceh and Harian Aceh Independent. Since January 2009 Aceh Institute use the column to spread the ideas of peace prospect, democracy and any developmental in Aceh.

    2. Joint-research with Multi-Stakeholder Review (MSR) to qualitatively study on post conflict program and women concerns in the on-going process.

    3. To provide training such as:

    a.  Peace building training for local prominent people of 3 district in August through October 2006, supported by BRR NAD-Nias.

    b. Peace Youth Camp, 1st round in July 2006 and 2nd round in July 2007 in Krueng Jreu, Aceh Besar, supported by Peace Brigade International (PBI)

    c. Systemic Conflict Analysis Training, November 2007, supported by Berghof Foundation, German.
